Track 20: RFID and Ubiquitous Services
Ubiquitous Computing-technologies such as RFID and sensor networks extend the capabilities of information processing with regard to an automated coupling of information systems with physical objects towards an “Inter-net of Things”. As a consequence, processes in logistics, manufacturing sales and after sales can be controlled in a much more fine-grained way. Moreover, the new level of data on real-world events for the first time allows the deployment of novel business models, e.g. car insurance premiums following the rationale of “Pay-As-You-Drive”. Successful implementations in practice, however, requires an in-depth understanding of the necessary base technologies and standards, the design principles of new sensor-based business processes as well as the fundamental changes of industry rules. Furthermore, potential acceptance issues regarding perceptions of omni-present surveillance by “spy chips” on the part of customers must be taken into account.
